Powerwall 3 Can Now Be Added on to Existing Powerwall 2 Systems

If you already have a Tesla Powerwall 2, whether you had it installed with us or with another company, there's good news: you may not need to replace it to get more backup power. Tesla recently released a software update that allows Powerwall 2 and Powerwall 3 to operate together in the same system. Before this update, adding capacity meant replacing the Powerwall 2 entirely. Now, homeowners can add on instead.

What Changed

Powerwall 2 and Powerwall 3 can now work side by side in one system. If you've been wanting more backup power, whether that's for longer outages, a new EV charger, or a growing household, this update makes it possible to expand your existing system rather than start from scratch. And it doesn't matter who installed your original Powerwall 2. This option is available to any eligible system.

Is Your System Eligible?

Most Powerwall 2 systems installed after Gateway 2 became standard (around late 2019 into 2020) are good candidates. A few things can affect eligibility:

• Older equipment. Systems with a first-generation Gateway or a Neurio meter need additional work before a Powerwall 3 can be added. We'll check your system's specific setup before quoting anything.
• Existing expansions or space. If your system has already been expanded, or if there isn't room for additional equipment, we'll need to take a closer look.

What Stays the Same

Adding a Powerwall 3 doesn't affect your existing Powerwall 2 warranty. Your original coverage stays exactly as it was. The new Powerwall 3, along with any expansion units, comes with its own 10-year warranty.

A Note on Financing

If your original system was financed through LightReach, this add-on isn't eligible for that financing program. Our team can walk you through other flexible options if you'd like to move forward.

Installation You Can Trust

This upgrade must be installed by a Tesla Certified Installer. Freedom Power is a certified installer, so even if another company installed your original Powerwall 2, we can handle your add-on with the same certified expertise.
