By Bret Biggart, CEO of Freedom Power
This week brought two significant developments to the solar industry — and if you're a Freedom Power customer, I want you to hear directly from me about what they mean for you.
The Texas Attorney General has launched a formal investigation into bad actors in the solar industry. And today, Freedom Forever — one of the largest and most complained-about solar companies in the country — filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
If you are a Freedom Forever customer, I am genuinely sorry. You may be facing uncertainty about your warranty, your service, and the future of a system you invested in. That is exactly the outcome we have spent a decade working to prevent for our own customers — and frankly, exactly why we have operated differently from day one.
If you are a Freedom Power customer, you are on solid ground. Here is what you need to know.
Freedom Power and Freedom Forever Are Not the Same Company
I want to be unambiguous: Freedom Power (formerly operating as Freedom Solar LLC, now rebranded as we've expanded our services) has never had any relationship, affiliation, or connection with Freedom Forever. We are a separate company, based in Austin, Texas, operating in Texas and Florida. The similarity in names has caused confusion before, and I want to put it to rest today.
We Have Always Done Things Differently
Freedom Forever's collapse did not surprise us. We have watched companies like theirs operate in this industry for over a decade, relying on aggressive door-to-door sales tactics, subcontracted labor, and a business model that prioritizes the sale over the customer. We have competed against them, and we have cleaned up after them.
Here is how Freedom Power is built differently:
We own the entire customer experience. From your first conversation with us through the 25-year lifetime of your solar system, we handle everything: proposal, permitting, installation, maintenance, and warranty service. We do not hand you off. We do not disappear after the contract is signed.
Our people are our people. Every employee at Freedom Power is a direct W-2 employee. We do not use subcontracted sales teams or third-party installers. The person who sells you your system is accountable to this company — and to you — for the outcome of your project.
We do not knock on your door. We have never used door-to-door sales, and we never will. Our customers come to us because they are ready, informed, and choosing solar on their own terms.
We are built to last. Sustaining this model is expensive and operationally demanding. To do it sustainably, we have diversified into complementary home services (HVAC, energy efficiency, and backup power) so that we can serve our customers over the long term without cutting corners. That investment paid off for our customers during recent Texas weather events, and it will continue to.
The Future of Solar Is Strong — And So Are We
The Attorney General's investigation is welcome news to us. We have been calling for accountability in this industry for years. Bad actors have damaged consumer trust in solar at a time when Texans need reliable, affordable energy more than ever. Electricity costs in Texas are projected to rise by as much as 30% over the next five years. Clean, self-generated solar power is one of the most powerful tools a family has to protect themselves from that reality.
We are not going anywhere. We are here for our customers, our employees, and the future of responsible solar in Texas and Florida.
